Carpet Stretching in Midland and Odessa, TX
Carpet that was once tight and even can develop ripples, waves, and loose edges over time. It makes a room look worn before its time, it catches your feet, and it pulls the rest of the space down with it. In most cases, the carpet itself is still in good shape. It just needs to be properly re-tensioned by someone who installs carpet for a living. That's what we do.
The Design Gallery by Paul Evans has been the flooring company West Texas trusts for years. Our installers re-stretch carpet for homes and businesses across the Permian Basin out of our flooring stores in Midland and Odessa.
Is it time to re-stretch your carpet?
You'll usually know carpet needs stretching by looking at it. The most common signs we see in West Texas homes:
- Visible ripples or waves across the floor. Usually most noticeable in hallways, doorways, and the middle of large rooms.
- Loose edges along the walls. The carpet has pulled away from the tack strips and no longer sits flat.
- Bulges and buckles in high-traffic paths. Carpet that's been worn loose by daily traffic or rolling chairs.
- Carpet that shifts after you move heavy furniture. A couch or bed dragged across the floor can pull carpet right out of position.
- Seams that have started to separate. Two pieces of carpet that were joined are pulling apart.
- A tripping hazard underfoot. If you've caught your toe on a ripple, that's the carpet asking for a stretch.
If any of these sound familiar, send a photo of the room to one of our flooring stores or give us a call. We'll tell you whether re-stretching is the right next step before we ever schedule a visit.

Why carpet buckles in the first place
Carpet doesn't ripple on its own. There's usually a clear reason, and knowing the cause helps us decide whether a stretch will hold long-term or whether something underneath needs to be addressed first.
Improper original installation. This is the most common cause we see. Carpet should be installed with a power stretcher, not just a knee kicker. Some installers cut that corner, and within a few years the carpet relaxes and waves start to appear.
Years of foot traffic and furniture moves. Even properly installed carpet can loosen over time. Heavy furniture dragged across the floor, busy hallways, and rolling office chairs all pull carpet gradually out of position.
Big swings in temperature or humidity. Carpet expands and contracts with the air around it. Long stretches of high heat in an empty house, or a damp room after water exposure, can both cause ripples.
Water exposure underneath. When carpet gets soaked, it stretches as it dries. Once the subfloor is dry again, the carpet needs to be re-tensioned to sit flat.
How our flooring experts re-stretch your carpet
The process is quick and clean.
- We walk the room with you and assess. Before we touch anything, we look at the carpet, the seams, the tack strips, and the subfloor. If something else needs attention first (a damaged tack strip, a soft spot in the subfloor), we point it out.
- We clear the work area. Stretching needs the room mostly empty. We'll talk through furniture handling with you ahead of the visit so there are no surprises.
- We detach the carpet from the tack strips. We pull the carpet free along the walls we'll be stretching toward.
- We re-tension the carpet across the full room. That's what makes the stretch hold instead of rippling again in a few months. Our installers do this work every day.
- We re-secure the carpet and trim the excess. Carpet is locked back onto the tack strips and the extra is trimmed clean along the edges.
- We put the room back together. Before we leave, the work area is cleaned up and the room is ready for you to use again.
Re-stretch or replace? An honest take
Not every wrinkled carpet is a candidate for stretching. As a flooring company, we'd rather tell you straight than sell you a service that won't last. Here's how we think about it.
Re-stretch when:
- The carpet itself is still in good shape
- The fiber, color, and pattern still look fresh
- Wrinkles and ripples are the main visible problem
- The carpet is less than ten years old
- Seams are intact or easily repairable
- You like the room as it is
Consider replacing when:
- The carpet is worn through in traffic paths
- Stains or pet damage cover large areas
- The padding underneath is damaged or compressed
- The carpet has been stretched multiple times before
- Seams are crumbling apart
- You're already planning to update the room
If you're not sure which side you fall on, that's exactly what our flooring experts are here for. We'll come look at the carpet and give you an honest read. If it's a clear stretch, we book the visit. If replacement makes more sense, we can walk you through carpet, hardwood, luxury vinyl, tile, or laminate at our flooring stores.
